It’s hot hot hot

Boy is it hot - I do enjoy the warm weather but when the temperature rises above 25 it starts not to be much fun, sleeping becomes a problem and everything becomes an effort.

The car temperature registered 30.5 yesterday, thankfully it has aircon.

 

We decided that we would go out and have a short walk – armed with bottles of water we set off.  It’s a walk we have done before from Shoreham towards Eynsford – needless to say we didn’t get to Eynsford on foot – we turned back after a mile it was just far too hot.  OK we set off at 1pm which wasn’t the most sensible time.

The scenery was just beautiful – when the sun is shining there is no place like this little Island we call Home.

Its hot hot hot

We are blessed with a south facing garden but when it’s hot our garden is way too hot to sit out in the direct sun; even under the umbrella it’s very warm – but I do enjoy the sunshine and try and make the most of this wonderful weather whilst it lasts.

The thermometer on the back of the house registered 100 degrees just after 1pm today.

 and even at 8pm this evening it's still over 70 or is that 25

It's been a while

But I am still here, albeit tired and battered after working much too much – I shouldn’t complain as I have a good job. Hopefully we can get away for a few days to recharge the batteries.

Lots of things happening – money saving is going well.  Managed to get £293 back from insurance company on SonnyHens van insurance; they had not applied his 4 years no claims discount, it a lot to lose when you are a male driver under 25 and driving a van.  After a few phone calls, a mention of the ombudsman the NCD was applied and the refund was back in my account.  Payments to CCs are still on track.

Finally, after many months our dining room is being decorated –things happen pole pole (very slowly in Swahili) in this house.  We decided to change from a pale creamy/yellow to a pale lilac/grey & deep purple; a bold move which was not universally welcomed at first, but its growing on the dissenters. The walls are painted , the new floor is down, new architrave is in place, and most of the skirting is down – one length on order; will be so happy all the furniture is back in its place; it’s all a bit discombobulated at the moment.

 

Flowers and veg in the garden are coming on a treat.  We have a number of different calistamans  (bottle brush) red, purple, white and yellow.  The yellow is flowering for the first time this year – bees just love it. 

 

Strawberries are looking plump - just waiting for some sun to ripen.

Smelly vision blog

The smell is heavenly.  When we moved here 13 years ago my mum gave me a cutting of the lilac that was in her garden.  It's now a lovely 9ft bush and at this time of year is swathed in beautiful white flowers.

Planting

Like with the weather I’m a little late in planting, our garden isn’t large and with part of it given over to My Girls this doesn’t leave much room for planting veg in a secure place away from chicken beaks.

 

Strawberries in hanging baskets

 

Seeds in tins or plastic bottles - these will be transplanted into old wine boxes, troughs, plastic boxes and tubs once the seedlings are big enough.

 

We did manage to plant up flowers in hanging baskets

 

 

These auriculas come up year after year with very little attention but wow what lovely colours

It’s been a beautiful day

The sun has shone, the doors and windows have beenwide open, and I felt a real uplift today.  Daffs in the trough at the front of the house.

Interesting sky

At 7am this morning this was the view from the kitchen window; the colour of the sky was a blue/grey with pink clouds.

What the fig…

I have a lovely fig tree in the garden, given to us by my mum for a wedding anniversary many moons ago and it's laden with fruit and I am a loss as to what to do them. I eat them straight of the tree, warm them in the oven with honey and have them with homemade ice cream. 

What else can I do with them? Any ideas?
